PUBLIC TRANSIT OPTIONS:
There are local and bigger distance buses to choose from in Panama! The local buses go from $1-2 and these buses are used by everyone. People hop on and off and they usually hold more people that you would hope. It’s a fun and inexpensive way to see the local area.
BUS OPTIONS:
Longer bus rides to the coast or between countries are served by a few lines in the region. The buses are larger, air conditioned with room for your luggage underneath. They a4re fairly comfortable and have TV screens. The more out in the country your destination, the smaller the bus..and less reliable it seems 🙂 I found the local buses …and bus drivers to drive when they felt like it. Have data on your phone and be prepared to have to pay for a cab or hitch a ride.
SHARED RIDE OPTIONS:
I take Uber whenever possible in the city. They are generally cheaper than taxis but DO NOT order one to pick you up from the airport. The locals do not like it. If you’re taking a taxi, negotiate your fare up front. They are not metered and you will be over charged if you just jump in. Uber however isn’t always an option and is not available outside of the bigger cities. Didi is a new provider specific to the area but at this time ( April 2020 ) doesn’t have enough drivers.
FLIGHTS OPTIONS:
I find inter region flights to be a bit expensive but big time savers if you don’t have a lot of luggage! Flights from Bocas Del Toro to Panama City are the most popular route on little hopper planes. There are a few lines that operate One way flights range from $100 -230 US generally.
I use Momondo & SkyScanner to find the best deals but make sure to google regional carriers that require you to book on their own sites.
